Kasigluk - Akula

Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

Yute, Hageland, $45 one way for a scheduled flight. Craig Air and Yukon charge about $175 for a 207 charter, which will seat several passengers and lots of luggage or groceries!

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

Walk - there is a boardwalk from the airport right through the village. The principal has picked us up in the school truck when we are first coming in, because of the luggage.

How big is the village? (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)500 people in Kasigluk. The village  is served by two K-12 schools. Akula is the New Village. The village is built on the banks of the Johnson River, and there are many lakes on the tundra around the village. There is a dry path that makes a great walking or running trail, which goes out behind the village and to a lake, which is great for skating at the beginning of freeze-up, before much snowfall. The tundra is covered with berries when we first get back in August, and many people are out picking. There are no hills or trees. Only tundra, lakes, birds and small animals.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

The weather is dry and windy. Very little rain, and infrequent snow. The wind in the winter is strong and cold. The temperature stays right around zero in the winter, with short stretches of negative double digit temps. When we come back in August, it is usually gray and rainy. That breaks within a few days, and the weather is perfect for kite flying and berry picking, with very gradual decrease in daily high temperature, and increase in wind velocity.

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

The housing at this site varies. There are three houses on school property that are new and fully functional as far as water and sewer. The other three houses that the school leases for teacher housing are equipped with incinerator toilets and large water containers. You have to haul water from the school for daily use, but the school has showers and washer and dryer. The houses are fully furnished with beds, dressers, living room furniture and dining furniture.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

Our store is up and down on what it has, can get, or is out of at any time! Alaska Bush Shippers has a catalog that they send out, and they shop at Costco for you and ship it out to you. Mr. Prime Beef in Anchorage has a website and will ship meat and seafood. SPAN Alaska has a pretty comprehensive catalog, and they usually have a rep. at the new teacher in-service to get you started. There are other food shippers that people use that they have been very happy with.

If you order, who do you recommend?

We use Alaska Bush Shippers for Costco stuff, and Mr. Prime Beef for all our meat. Wal-Mart also ships anything they stock, and they’ve been pretty good.

What should a new teacher bring?

Besides personal stuff, kitchen equipment and bedding, I would suggest a couple of wash tubs, and something to scoop water out of the cans. We use a gallon pitcher and a half gallon pitcher. We didn’t have a container for carrying water from the school. Five gallon jugs work well as they have closing spouts and can be used to hold water on your kitchen counter. You should probably bring a sleeping bag to use when chaperoning trips. We sent up a large pot for heating water, a shelf stereo system, a TV/VCR, and our computer. Bring whatever will make you happy and keep you entertained in the middle of winter. This is your home for nine months.
