Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

Kusko, ERA, Yute, Craig, and Hagland. $60 one way.

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

If it is possible, the school van will pick teachers up at the airport. Village airline agents can take people to their homes. In such a case teachers would walk about 2 mile from the airport to teacher housing.

How big is the village?

About 600 people.

(Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

It is a tundra, coastal village located by the mouth of the Kanektok River. The river is known for its world class salmon and trout fishing. The village has about 7 miles of gravel roads.  It is about 65 miles south and west of Bethel (40 minutes by plane).  Quinhagak has some of the best drinking water in the Delta.

How many students in school?

About 185

How many teachers?

15

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

In August the weather is usually nice with occasional light rain. The temperature is about 40 to 60 degrees. The river usually freezes up about October 25 and reopens in early April.  The average winter temperature is about 5 degrees.

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

The housing is adequate and usually has a washer and dryer in each unit. There is running water, but the amount of water is limited. The houses are on honey buckets.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

There are two main stores. For the most part they are well stocked; however, they do not stock fresh milk and but usually stock bread and some fresh fruit. Most teachers buy from the local stores and from Anchorage and Bethel by bush order.

If you order, who do you recommend?

Walmart, Fred Meyer, Costco, PACE, Sam’s Club and Span Alaska.  If you are traveling through Anchorage and want to shop those stores, they do have bush order departments that will ship your items for you for a fee.

What should a new teacher bring?

Mud boots, snow boots, raincoat, heavy coat, light coat, warm gloves, warm hat, chemicals for honey bucket, candles, fishing pole, bug repellent, ice cleats.
