Nightmute

Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

We only have three regular air carriers Grant Aviation $90 roundtrip from Bethel, ERA is $136 roundtrip, and Hageland is $130 for a roundtrip . There are charters available for around $550 on Craig Air and Hageland..

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

Usually there is an agent waiting to pick up passengers, but the teachers usually call ahead and have someone out there to pick them up.  It’s no fun trying to walk with all your bags.

How big is the village? (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

There are 220 people living in Nightmute.   Nightmute is a very long village that extends along a river and is backed up on the other side by a large hill.  There is tundra on the other side of the river that extends about 30 some miles to the Bering Sea.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

In the winter a new teacher should be prepared for wind chills up to 100 degrees below zero. (Get big boots, snow pants, and a heavy parka). In August, be prepared for rain and mud. You need knee-high boots. You might want a light jacket when you come out. Make sure you have rain gear if you want to do any exploring.

How many students in school?

There are about 70 students K-12.

How many teachers are there?

There are 6 teachers and 1 site administrator.

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

Two housing units are leased from the corporation and one of them has mold growing through the walls. The district is building two new duplexes this coming year with running water.   This new housing will be done sometime in the next year, hopefully.

The furniture is still fairly new and in pretty good condition.   Three of the four housing units have a new flush toilet system and running water in their kitchen as well as a sink in the bathroom with hot and cold running water.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

We have a brand new store that is fairly well stocked.  The teachers still order a lot of groceries from Anchorage because of the price factor and it’s the only way to get fresh produce and meat.

If you order, who do you recommend?

Most of us order from  JB Bush Shippers(Sam’s Club), Prairie Bush Shippers (Carrs or Costco), SPAN-Alaska out of Seattle, Express Yourself Expeditor out of Anchorage for fresh produce, and Wayne’s Meat Market for Fresh Meat and Seafood. It takes about two weeks to receive an order so make sure you order ahead
of time.  Anything you might want or need you should order or buy on the way out here in Anchorage or Bethel.  Don’t expect it to be in the store.

What should a new teacher bring?

A new teacher should bring warm bedding, pots and pans, dishes, household appliances like your favorite can opener or waffle maker, and anything else that would make teacher housing feel more like a home.  A TV and VCR are two very good things to think about bringing or ordering, and I would suggest a bread maker because fresh bread is sometimes hard to come by.
