Who flies there, and how much does it cost? Regular flights are around $25-$30 on Yute. I am not sure of the other regular flights. You can charter with about anyone: Craig: a 207 plane costs $75 one way, a small plane is $65 one way. Yute ($70 ow), Hageland, Cami and Grant 207 $110 ow (prices vary and sometimes change from one flight to another) When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home? People generally walk but the principal may pick you up if you call ahead of time. It is about 1/2 mile or maybe two city blocks (your pilot can point you in the right direction). How big is the village? (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.) 350 people. (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.) Napakiak is on an island between the Johnson and Kuskokwim Rivers. The village is split - the newer housing is at one end, with the Co-op Store, the Post Office and the clinic, the airstrip separates old from new, older side has the school, Jungs Trading Post, the fire department, city office and jail. There is also Jungs Marina. Whats the weather like, and what is it like in August? It varies, it may be raining so you would need boots. Most of the time it is dry. In the winter it is much like Bethel, but not as windy. How many students in school? K-12 about 113 students How many teachers? 7 teachers, 4 aides, and 2 associate teachers Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?) Six with running water and flush toilets, two of these are small two-bedroom houses that are crowded for two adults. The housing needs some repairs but for the most part are adequate. Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order? We have two pretty good ones. Fresh fruits and vegetables sometimes are available. No fresh milk but powdered and liquid boxed are available. If you order, who do you recommend? Sams, Costco, Span Alaska , Walmart, (bush order department) Fred Myers and Carrs send out but ask before you start filling your baskets because not all locations have this service. What should a new teacher bring? Check if you are going to have a house mate. Such items as pots and pans may not be necessary. If living alone, send kitchen items and linens. 13" TV-VCR combo (others will not be mailed) books, music, videos, computers are nice, sewing projects, extra batteries (are very expensive in the village) for clock etc. Flashlights, fun thingssanity things like games, cards, etc. If coming from a warm climate buy cold weather clothes from Cabalas or Eddie Bauer. Some suggest a breadmaker and toaster or maybe even a toaster oven. We need to distill our water here. One distiller is provided. If you have a family you may need more than one. Sears has a good one. Bring a big, big, big sense of humor. | ||
