Who flies there, and how much does it cost? ERA-two
flights a day-leaves Bethel 8:30 a.m-arrives Mekoryuk 9:40 a.m., the
second leaves Bethel at 4:40- 5:15 and arrives at 5:40- 6:15 When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home? By truck or snow machine - the airport is 3 1/2 miles from town. If the school truck is not at the plane, the ERA or Grant agent can take you to your home. How big is the village? (Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.) There are 200 people on Nunivak Island, which is approximately 40 x 60 miles. We are the only village, the rest is wildlife area. It is a volcanic island about 25 miles off the coast. The village is situated where a river flows into the Bering Sea. The island is volcanic with sandy beaches. There is tundra with low bushes and low hills/mountains. Willows grow along the river and in protected areas. There are musk-ox, reindeer and fox on the island. The reindeer are raised as a village business. The island contains a large bird sanctuary. Whats the weather like, and what is it like in August? August temperatures are typically in the low 60’s. The weather will be slightly rainy and probably overcast with some wind. On average, Mekoryuk is 10 degrees warmer than Bethel in the winter, and roughly 10 degrees cooler than Bethel in the summer due to the influence of the sea. Winter temperatures rarely dip below 0 degrees, and the wind rarely stops blowing. Wind chills of –40 are not uncommon in winter, and wind speeds are frequently gale. How many students in school? 39 including preschool and kindergarten thru 12 grade. How many teachers? 4 plus teaching principal Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?) Running water, flush toilets, showers, washer/dryer. It is a 4-plex with three 2-bedroom apartments and one efficiency. It is only 6 years old and is the best teacher housing in the district. The housing and the school are located in the middle of town, about a block from the river/beach. Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order? A couple of stores that are well stocked. One is run by the corporation and the other one is privately owned. If you order, who do you recommend? Span Alaska, Waynes Meat Market, Prairie Market. What should a new teacher bring? Bedding,
dishes, clothes, warm clothes for winter, books, hunting/ fishing gear,
and a flexible plan. | ||
