Who flies there, and how much does it cost? ERA and Hageland fly out twice a day Monday – Friday and once or twice on Saturday and Sunday. Grant flies out three times a day Monday—Friday and once or twice on weekends. Fares vary over the course of the year. Lows of $45 one way are not uncommon, nor are highs of $90 one way When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home? You walk - the housing is near the airport. You might need to borrow the wheelbarrow from school to help with your luggage. You may also ask the agent or the school maintenance person for help. How big is the village? 350 people (geographic makeup - along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs, etc?) The village is located above a small river. There are boardwalks wherever you need to walk in the village. If you go out onto the tundra you will need tall waterproof boots. Whats the weather like, and what is it like in August? Usually the weather in August is good weather, sunny and warm. Only one year in the past 12 have I experienced rain when I returned. Make sure to bring mosquito repellant. How many students in school? 126 How many teachers? 9 certified teachers Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?) The is no running water so you’ll need water containers (up to 5 gallons) to carry water. Water is drawn either from safe water or the school, and should be distilled. Some houses have large water tanks which are filled from the school water supply which is limited. About half of the housing units have running water, but all of the houses have honey buckets, so you’ll need to dump your own. Trash is usually picked up by the maintenance staff and taken to the dump for you. Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order? There are two stores. Sometimes they have fresh fruit, veggies and frozen meat. The corporation store is bigger but not always better stocked. A& L has videos for rent on a regular basis. There is a marine store for boat/motor parts and snowmobile parts. If you order, who do you recommend? Most supplies can be ordered from many different stores in Anchorage. Fred Meyer, Sam’s Club and the Alaska Bush Company will package and ship your orders for you, though they charge a packaging fee. Nowadays, most teachers order what they need via the internet which is available at the school. What should a new teacher bring? Food to start with; bedding, linens, etc; pots and pans, dishes, flatware, pillows, a telephone, iron, TV, VCR, dish drainer, boom box, anything youll need to be comfortable. The radio reception is very poor. Winter clothing can be ordered from several catalogs which come to the staff regularly. | ||
