Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

There is running water and flush toilets in the two duplex housing units and a teacher housing unit adjacent to the AVCP Headstart building. Everyone else packs their water and uses electric toilets. Garbage can be picked up for a low monthly fee. Laundry and shower facilities are provided at the school for certified teachers and their families. Each housing unit is supplied with water containers and a water distiller to make drinking water.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

There are two stores. Weather permitting, fresh produce comes in when ordered. Teachers can order out frozen meat and other expensive goods.

If you order, who do you recommend?

Meat can be ordered from Mr. Prime Beef and Wayne’s in Anchorage. Dry goods may be ordered from Span Alaska, Fred Meyer, Sam’s Club, or K-Mart. Arrangements can be made to order goods from one of the stores from Bethel.

What should a new teacher bring?

Personal items and medicines that you would need. Bring kitchen and household goods. Bring winter clothes, snow pants and a winter coat plus winter boots and rubber boots.

A teacher who will help you learn about the village of Chefornak.
