Who flies there, and how much does it cost?

Hageland, Yute, Craig, and Camai all have scheduled flights throughout the day - seat fare is $40. A three-seater charter costs about $115.

When you reach your site, how do you get from the airport to your home?

The school is about one mile from the landing strip. There is a road that is usually dry. Arrangements for help with a four-wheeler (some with a small trailer) can be made with the school. Most people walk and use wheelbarrows.

How big is the village?

280 people

(Geographic makeup-along a river, slough, coast? Tundra, muddy, hills, cliffs? Etc.)

The village is located along the west bank of the Petmigtalek River. It is about fifteen airmiles from Bethel and about one and a half hours by boat. It takes about 25-30 minutes by snow machine in the winter. The land around the village is very flat with small willow bushes along creeks and sloughs. The village is in a drier area, however, there is a lake in the center of the village. There are boardwalks throughout the well traveled areas of the village.

What’s the weather like, and what is it like in August?

The average summer temperature is around 40-45 degrees - and usually windy. The average winter temperature is 0 to minus10 degrees, and can sometimes get as cold as minus 50 to minus 60 degrees with the wind chill factored in.

How many students in school?

88

How many teachers?

7

Describe the housing (i.e., running water? honey buckets?)

The teacher housing is very livable and comfortable. There are three two-bedroom houses, one three-bedroom trailer with a large entry that connects to a small, one-bedroom trailer, and a two-bedroom house connected to the grade school. There is running water - either continuous or holding tanks. The houses with holding tanks have flush toilets.

Stores? Are they well stocked or do you order?

There are two stores that are fairly well-stocked. There are times that the stores are fairly empty–for example, just before the barge come in. You probably cannot count on fresh items such as eggs, fruit and vegetables on a regular basis.

If you order, who do you recommend?

Bushmailer

What should a new teacher bring?

Rubber boots, called break-up boots are necessary for fall and spring, also a raincoat and rain pants. A good parka for cold weather, warm mittens or gloves, good snowboots, a warm hat, scarf, and a face mask. It would be good to bring a two-week supply of staples, such as flour, sugar, dry milk, etc.
